Are you able to influence others?  Being an entrepreneur and being a leader is not mutually exclusive.  In fact, successful entrepreneurs possess a well-developed ability to influence without formal power.  What does that mean?  Well, it means they have the ability to influence people from other than a position of power.  Are you even more confused now?

Think about it:

  1. What are the typical circumstances under which you do something or support a request by someone who does not have power over your success or failure in any way?
  2. What type of person has been able to propose and get your buy-in for something without being an authority over you and you acquiesced because you wanted to?

Hierarchical power can command but not necessarily persuade.  The people who have successfully persuaded you, ethically winning you over, are leaders.  Leaders influence people to follow them and follow directions because they want to.  To be a leader, you must have followers.

Successful entrepreneurs have the skills to influence people to work toward a common goal because they want to and this is not done in a manipulative way.  Leaders create results from which the majority will benefit from; there are good intentions at the heart of it all.  Unsurprisingly, others are able to feel the genuineness and throw their support behind them with confidence.

Successful entrepreneurs are leaders who know when to be rational and use logic and when to persuade or compromise, particularly to resolve conflict.  They are skilled at maintaining healthy relationships with their partners, customers, etc by balancing having an objective yet interpersonal connection with a focus on the most important common goals.

How would you rate your leadership?  Better yet, how would others?

It’s always good to complete a 360-degree review of yourself amongst your peers, direct reports, and others who work closely with you.  You’ll be surprised what you learn about yourself and how others view you.
